Roll Me Over, Lay Me Down and Do It Again: DC Comics New New 52

Well, we knew it was coming – the DC brass all but told us it was – but DC’s New 52 is now the New 46.

DC has announced that they are canceling Men of War, Blackhawks, O.M.A.C., Mister Terrific, Static Shock, and, in the interest of at least some justice, Rob Leifeld’s Hawk & Dove, after their respective eighth issues.

But since DC’s multiverse includes 52 worlds, and because the only words that rhymes with “46” are “ticks,” “dicks,” and “pricks,” they will be releasing six new regular books in May, including:

  • The relaunch of Grant Morrison’s Batman Incorporated, for some reason,
  • Earth 2, a book about the Justice Society. by writer James Robinson, who wrote the 1990’s miniseries The Golden Age about the Justice Society (A story about old school heroes that everyone loved), and the screenplay to the movie League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (A story about old school heroes that everyone hated. And which might have killed Sean Connery),
  • Dial H by fantasy novelist China Miéville, an damn interesting-looking take on the psychology of having superpower, based on a 1960s House of Mystery story that no one found interesting,
  • G.I. Combat, by J.T. Krul, because apparently Men of War wasn’t wartastic enough,
  • The Ravagers: a Howard Mackie-written spinoff of Scott Lobdell’s Teen Titans and Superboy about other teen heroes who I’m guessing, based on Lobdell’s other writing, ravage Starfire, and,
  • World’s Finest, by writer Paul Levitz with rotating art by George Perez and Kevin Maguire, about Huntress and Power Girl. And based on their costumes, I’m guessing “World’s Finest” doesn’t apply to their stories, if you get my drift.

The biggest bummer about this to me is the cancellation of O.M.A.C., which we were really into. But the most interesting thing is the commitment to stick with an even 52 monthly titles. Why is that, DC Editor In Chief Bob Harras?

I think our comfort zone right now is 52. I think that’s a nice number and it’s worked very nicely for us so far.

Considering they haven’t cancelled Red Hood and The Outlaws or Catwoman, I’m guessing that they like “52” based on bust measurements.

The new batch of “New 52” books drops in May.
