Who Wants To Be An Avenger? Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers Lineup Revealed

We’ve known for quite some time that Brian Michael Bendis’s run on the various Avengers titles was coming to an end, and it was recently announced that current Fantastic Four writer Jonathan Hickman was going to be taking over the two main titles, Avengers and The New Avengers. But one of the burning questions leading into the transfer of power has been: after the Avengers Vs. X-Men event shakes out and Hickman takes over, who’s gonna be on which team?

Well, some of those questions have been answered, as Marvel has released the first three covers to Avengers, written by Hickman with art by Jerome Opena, picturing a pretty big gathering of superheroes (and, as did Pinocchio, I question the correct term for a gathering of multiple superheroes. For today, I will eschew “gaggle” and “pride,” and will go with “wad.”):

Wow, so that’s… just about everybody, isn’t it? From left to right, it seems that the active wad of Avengers will include:

  • Cannonball
  • Captain Marvel
  • Nipple Indicator Lad
  • Captain America
  • Hulk
  • Wolverine
  • Falcon
  • Black Widow
  • Thor
  • Sunspot
  • Iron Man
  • Hawkeye
  • Spider Woman
  • Spider-Man

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Wow, Rob,” you’re thinking, “I am unfamiliar with the two-fisted (or two-other-appendaged) adventures of Nipple Indicator Lad!” Well, that’s because I just made him up. I have no idea who that shadowed dude with the two rings on his chest between Captain Marvel and Captain America is. Newsarama suspects he might be Icarus from The Eternals, but we’re apparently gonna need to wait to find out.

But is this all the Avengers, Jonathan?

Wow, 18 Avengers! That’s quite a wad (that’s what she said!)! Still and all, that’s a pretty damn big number of members as it is… I’m not sure how big a wad of superheroes Jonathan has in mind –

So in a nutshell, it appears that the roster of Avengers will include… damn near everybody, ever. For all I know, I’m an Avenger now. God knows I do enjoy indicating my nipples.

So who are gonna be the other eight members of Hickman’s Avengers? Well, I have my guesses. With Marvel ramping up for a Guardians of The Galaxy movie, with a more cosmic-based Avengers 2 expected to follow, we can probably expect one of the space-based Marvel heroes… and with Nova getting a focus in the digital extra features of Avengers Vs. X-Men, I’d put a dollar on him picking up an ID card. Plus, with Avengers Academy wrapping up soon, Hank Pym’s got fuck-all to do, and with Edgar Wright working on an Ant-Man movie, that character needs a place to land and stay in fandom’s consciousness. Plus, Hank being around means Ultron can also be around, which is the kind of story Hickman thrives on.

Regardless, given Hickman’s recent history, I think we can rest easy knowing that this wad of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be assembled when Reed Richards inevitably goes apeshit.

Avengers #1 drops in December.
