Jonah Hex In: A Good Jonah Hex Movie

One of my biggest fears when I heard about DC’s New 52 was that they’d use it as an opportunity to cancel some of their smaller books that never got the attention (or, honestly, the audience) that Batman and Green Lantern got, but that I really enjoyed, like Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s Jonah Hex.

I don’t remember why I was so worried… oh yeah – because DC fucking cancelled Jonah Hex.

But I should have known that Jonah Hex is IMPOSSIBLE to kill (If the Goddamned movie couldn’t do it…)! DC’s kept Gray and Palmiotti on to script All-Star Western, which will be starring ALL of DC’s star western characters, including Jonah Hex, and…

Yeah, pretty much Jonah Hex.

This past weekend, DC released a motion comics trailer for the book, which you can see after the jump:

Go ahead, it’s okay; you can say it with me:

“Gotham Fucking City?”

Yep:

Even when Gotham City was just a one-horse town, crime was rampant – and things only get worse when bounty hunter Jonah Hex comes to town. Can Amadeus Arkham, a pioneer in criminal psychology, enlist Hex’s special brand of justice to help the Gotham Police Department track down a vicious serial killer?

I would be terrified at putting Jonah Hex in an urban setting except:

  1. Palmiotti and Gray did not put out a bad issue of Jonah Hex in more than five years, and:
  2. I read Hex.

I understand Warner corporate wanting as many books as possible to tie into the DC Universe proper in a recognizable way, and I don’t begrudge that, mostly because Palmiotti and Gray’s track record on Hex leads me to believe that they can pull this off.

One way or the other. The way I see it, in a worst-case scenario, they get the order to make Hex the gunslinging Batman of the 1870’s, and we’ll get something like, “Criminals are a cowardly, superstitious lot, and I must become what they fear most… yes, father… I shall become… a syphillitic crab louse…” (via Robot6)
