Get It In The Back For A Buck: Batman Backup Stories

A cynical man might say that the real story here is: yeah, the price of Batman is jumping up to $3.99. An optimist might say that we’re finally getting some solid background on the Court of Owls, co-written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Rafael Albuquerque. A realist like me might say, “Fuck. Now I have to review two stories every month.”

What are we gonna be forking over twelve and a half cents a page for, Scott?

The first backup, in issue eight will give a sense of the terrifying scope of the Court of Owls’ attack on Gotham. This really will be the first shot in a war for the soul of Gotham City… And then, starting in issue nine, we’ll begin a three part story called “The Fall of the House of Wayne” that will investigate the secret history of the Court of Owls and its relationship to the Wayne family – particularly to Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce’s parents. The story will be told from the point of view of Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred’s father, and offer some big surprises and shocks about the forces that shaped the bat-mythology as we know it.

Those forces being recursive influences – Jarvis was influenced by Alfred who is now the son of Alfred… I feel woozy.

The backup series is gonna be co-written by James Tynion IV, who is currently best known for being co-writer on the Batman backup series. He is also on Twitter. The concept art by Albuquerque looks pretty damn good, actually… and I’ll even throw in Greg Capullo’s cover to Batman #8 because you seem like the decent sort (I don’t know where these rumors about you started; I just don’t get the “amputee fat chick” vibe off you):

Batman #8 drops in April.
